I Want To Change

... my hair!

OK.. reader Very Nosey Girl has really got me interested in having a whole new look. Plus a lot of you have been saying NAY! to my blunt cut across the forehead bangs for ageeesss.

Since it's time for this year's rebonding ( I straighten my hair once a year)... I'll rethink my hairstyle.

Firstly, I need to tell you, I am a wash and go type of girl, my only hair indulgence is my rebonding once every 10months or so... which takes hours... but after that, my hair is fuss free for a year! I like that, and that's a big reason why I have been wearing my hair straight.
Secondly, I did think about having curls some years back but my stylist warned me about the upkeep ( can't just wash and go?? must blow dry??)... plus I have VERY fine hair.. so when you perm, it's likely to be frizzy and messy instead of having heavy curls :(

Anyone with experience on this?? What do you think?
(this one curled with curling tongs)
Next.. I am wondering- Should I get extensions put in before going to perm and cut my hair?? cos i know tht most of the girls with these big sexy curly styles, actually have extensions.

What's your view on extensions?? Damaging? Uncomfortable? or good move? Should I do it before or after the cut+perm??
Lastly... do these styles all look so good because it's actually the COLOUR? I haven't died my hair before... but I think dark brown or black hair will look shitty in curls??
and if I do colour my hair... what is the upkeep like?? Do I have to touch up every month??? Can I do it from home?? Is coloured hair a nightmare to maintain?

Yes... I am a lazy girl. But I am so sick of my hair. Would love to hear all your opinions and suggestions.
TIA!
P/s- the only thing confirmed for now is- I will have side swept fringe. I think this style, sideswept fringe, and the length of it (is that layered or not??) just keep straight ( not re-ebonded) would suit me and be pretty much no maintenance!

But then.. what about Colour??

OMG too many decisions!

  1. This one (http://home.rasysa.com/afloat/style/image/17822_11.jpg) is pretty alluring and i believe more suitable for you but that's a safe option.

  2. ok.. but i have to wait abt 8 months to grow out my fringe to a length thts long enough to be curled lah.

  3. think the side swept layered fringe would be good, and then maybe more layers/feathering along the sides to frame the face instead of all one length?

don't perm your hair. since you have fine hair, it will be far from wash-and-go for you and will probably drive you nuts.

unless you have somewhat of a natural wave, then maybe you can leave it to grow out or use some styling aid to enhance the waves.

  4. hi holly! this is a completely unrelated qn but i just wanted to ask for a brief review on Nando's? Was it good? Service efficient etc? Would like to bring the bf there for our anniversary.
Btw I think you would look great with curls! :)

i have the exact same concerns as you Holly..! I have straight long charcoal black hair and i sometimes ogle at those japanese girls who got those brown sexy big curls.
The problem is im not adventurous enough to try it!
Like, what if it doesn't work out, I have to dye it back to artificial black all over again??!!

After months and years of struggle, i think i shall just stick to my good ol' black and straight style and curl it with curler tongs when i feel like it! It is reversible this way. :)

I see... so you rebond because it is easy and fuss free ^^

    Some suggestions:

-If you like it straight but can live with it not being stick straight, you can try relaxing it instead. I read about some new method and it is less damaging than rebonding, although it is less straight.

-You can go for a digital perm or ceramic perm. They are less damaging than the old perm method and the results are very natural with loose curls (just have to discuss the desired results with your stylist). You can just wash and wear for everyday style, no blow drying or setting needed, unless you want it salon perfect for some occasion, otherwise fuss free. Check out liese and lucidol (available at Watsons); they have lots of leave in conditioners/serums/creams that are easy to use that are formulated for curls.

-extensions are put in after cut/perm/colour. They will match the colours after. And if you choose extensions that are already curled, you can get away without having to curl your hair.

-I won't say black hair will look shitty in curls... but it is not a look for everyone. It can be very harsh or hard to wear. My advice to choosing the right hair colour IS... go to one of those shops (some at Far East Plaza) that offer hair extensions, they usually sell wigs too. Try on some of the colours and find a colour that suits you. Because you have tanned skin, I reckon most shades of brown will look decent. BUT avoid tones with too much reds in them, choose ones that are more ash tone, they are more flattering on yellow skin. You can check out some of the VIVI models hair colours. They are the types that are flattering on tanned Asian skin.

-Depends on how fast your hair grows. Mine is dead slow so I can go for 6 weeks without touch ups. My sis needs it maybe once every 4 weeks. Also depends on if you can live with roots showing (my schedule permits for less than an inch of regrowth showing). And I guess the chosen colour? If your chosen colour isn't a big diff from your hair colour, showing some roots won't look all that bad. Plus spritzing some lemon juice over your hair and especially on your new growth before you go under the sun can give you natural highlights. it helps to blend in the new growth.

-You can do it at home easily as long as you can get a parent or a sibling (any willing being) to help. Part of the reason why salon jobs look so awesome is because the colouring is even. We can never colour our own hair evenly... so get your sidekick to colour it section by section, making sure to coat every cuticle, basically doing it exactly how the professionals do it in the salon. And remember to always buy enough hair dye. Most people think they can get away with less but you need to coat the hair with enough solution evenly for the colours to look good.

-The big issue is the colour results. You won't know what the colour outcome will be until you get it done... and you might be allergic to the solution. So do a patch test and a strand test. And if you decide to get some hair dye over the counter, try to get the ones formulated for Asians because of two reasons. The end results usually are more flattering because it is designed for yellow tone skins, and our hair structures are different from Caucasian hair too. For home use, I recommend Hoyu Beauteen (Watsons and most pharmacies). Doesn't matter if you choose the colours from the male or female range, the colours are great, long lasting, not very damaging, deep pigment, etc, basically great over-counter.

Other than having to touch up regrowths, you wash and wear coloured hair as per norm. Well, that is what I do and I have pretty good hair. By the way, I am really lazy too. I wash it everyday, condition once in a while, leave in conditioner after every wash, I don't blow dry at all.

  10. WOW, you have not dyed your hair before?

I think you should! It makes a lot of difference.

I did it the first time because the bf says to try.

And then it ends up that every time the hairstylist asks if I want to dye my hair as well, on top of rebonding (I have thing of rebonding once every 10 mths like you :p), I will just reply yes.

The colour, I guess just ask the stylist to do whatever he/she thinks is right.

    ------------
I did curl for this CNY. And it ends up that I mostly can't be bothered to dry it and apply all the things (same as you... wash and go person).

So my bf says just rebond it back this time. hahahaha. And he prefers my hair straight.

if you have fine hair, don't perm it.
i have fine hair too, i tried to perm it twice using different methods, but ended up rebonding it back in the following month. it was a disaster. just use the curling tongs when you want a different hair style.

  13. ok thank you girls!!

Thanks for all the advice/personal experience.

I think I shall dye hair first..

Then... wait a few weeks for my fringe to grow longer.

Then cut side swept fringe. I might have to rebond/relax the fring part, cos mine won't fall across naturally I don't think. :)

    And see how that looks.

Possibly will go on to put like waves into the length of the hair.

I'm a girl who loves playing with my hair alot that I can't bear to do any rebonding to it. Cos rebonding means I'll have to keep it straight and untouched as much as possible! So I'm thumbs up for perms!

I tried ceramic perm the first time and my hair turns out to be super curly like a doll! Everyone says I look good in that but this one requires high maintainence! Need to use sculpting lotion everytime to keep the curls in shape.

Now, I'm having body wave perm which is loose type of perm. I think cos of my hair structure, it still lasted for me. I can go for a straighter look by blow drying it or a curlier look by applying sculpting lotion or natural waves by doing nothing to it.

But if u are a bathed and go girl, I suppose rebonding still suits u!

dyed hair is a horror to maintain- colour fades but will forever be there, touch-up must be done at least once every 2 months (just the roots).
