  2. Muahaha.. Oh my, Holly.. This is hilarious stuff!..

  3. boys... what's wrong with the MHA? I looked at the site and there are many interesting positions.

As long as it's not MOE, it's fine with me. :) ha... although to be fair, they've been good employers in terms of career prospects and $$$ Salary. Just that I didn't like the rigidity lah.

this is hard to swallow from someone who quit their day job to be unemployed, with a bit of blogging on the side.

    ReplyDelete
  5. @ anon 12.38 hard to swallow? Why?

Just because I don't work for the MHA does it mean that I can't inform readers tht there is a job fair this weekend and that if they are interested they shld explore the opportunities available?

I don't get what you mean. yes, I quit teaching a year plus ago... and I write online/ blog full time now. But it doesn't mean tht everyone has to do the same to be happy right?

I agree that its grating, and a tad hypocritical.

You say it plays a big role in one's happines, the happiness of one's family, where we live etc etc.

Yet, you don't have a job. How do you marry the two?

Either you don't agree that having a job is that important (since you don't have one), or you get all these elements from somewhere else. A rich boyfriend perhaps? I'm sure he'll make sure your living conditions aren't dire, or your future childrens'.

Anon 5:09, why so aggro? Why does it bother you how HJ earn her keeps? Last heard she teaches tuition so what's the big deal? She's just dishing out info on recruitment so no drama here.

    HJ, don't bother justifying...so ridiculous.

I'm not exactly HJ's fan nor the type who'll defend HJ (cos I sometimes can't stand her) but then criticizing her way of earning her keeps is just a bit way off tangent and it kinda crosses the line..Anon5:09, what's your beef? It's not even your business. Don't you have better things to get aggro over?

  8. Anonymous5:48 pm

Goodness. Shes just advertising abt the job fair. That is her job as a blogger. What has it got to do with her personal choices/life? Why shd she attempt to 'marry the two'? Thats just silly.

  9. ah... was in scdf during my NS stint. station life wasn't really my cup of tea.

too much glamour and too little to deliver. but paramedic is a good vocation imo.

and i sense a little envy going on around here. haha. honestly i do feel a little envious. i too, would like to have a way to earn enough money to enjoy the fine things in life, go on holidays every few months, without having to put in 12 hours of work a day.

    =)

come on guys, ya? i think holly's just helping out readers who are still looking for a job. don't make this into anything more than it is.

    cheers =)

I am not sure about such advertorials - should you only advertise for things you really believe in?
Not sure if I am being too idealistic here by saying that.

And don't get me wrong, not trying to be critical here. But yea I guess she has to making a living huh.

    ReplyDelete
  11. Anonymous9:16 pm

Anon 6.18, what's with the whole idealism thing? Is it so difficult to see that HJ's blog has very high traffic with high readership and so MHA's asking her and most likely other popular bloggers to advertise so they get enough publicity? It's probably THAT simple.

It doesn't take much brain to figure it out. Do you think everyone at Straits Times believe in what every single advertiser trying to sell?

HJ, I dunno how this simple advertorial has become a whole issue of how you make a living and your idealism and all!? *roll eye* Can't deal. And HJ, don't justify anything! You don't need to! It's none of anyone's business! I guess you really can't please everyone!

Hey Holly, thanks for the insights. Really helpful. I'm searching for more info on this career path actually... then chance upon your blog post. Thanks! It has been useful for me. Cheers!

Actually, it's the blogger's site. So it's up to them what they like to post. If the reader don't like what he/she is reading - just leave :) Nobody is forcing you to read! Give the bloggers some space to write! It's THEIR blog!

    ReplyDelete
  14. btw, some other high profile blogs are also advertising for MHA.

and i think it's a little closed minded to think that you can only advertise something you really believe in =) (what's to believe anyway? it's a job, not a philosophical moral issue)

so long as it is useful to others, constructive and encouraging, i think it's fine.

example some people don't believe in the 12 steps program to quit addictions, but is it wrong if they recommend it to someone who might really need it?

    ReplyDelete
  15. see? justin appreciated it. lol

  16. Anonymous11:20 am

haha goodness, HJ why are your readers so defensive? Anon 9:16 PM, it's not even asking HJ to 'justify' anything. It's just the thoughts of her readers? Geez.

    ReplyDelete
  17. Anonymous11:45 am

    Agree with Anon 9:16

If the blogger can write freely, then readers can comment freely. Freedom of expression swings both ways.

Plus, to all the hyper-defensive people above, who think HJ can do nothing wrong...

.. although it's "just a blog", I think it's important that your choices in life are consistent with the opinions you air. Particularly on a blog that markets itself as a lifestyle blog.

If you opinions aren't backed up by the way you live your life, how can you be credible as a lifestyle blogger?

At the end of the day, if this post were just an add, then that is fine. But the introductory blurb about how a job is so important to peoples' lives just struck me as a really odd thing to say in the context of the personal choices the blogger has made in life.

Yeah, maybe that's over-thinking things :) but it's what went through my mind when reading it..

    ReplyDelete
  18. Anonymous12:12 pm

Anon 11:45, so you said yeah HJ should be consistent in her choices in life and all those moral stuff right? Then you obviously have issues with her then cos otherwise you wouldn't be commenting and slagging her for it. But the question is, since you have issue with her and this post, then why the hell are you STILL commenting???? Some more spend time commenting on it when you have issue with it and then expounding on how people should be consistent with their choices blah blah blah. So if you have issue with this post, or HJ's blog for that matter, why the hell do you choose to keep coming back? Why not stop reading her blog instead and go somewhere else cos it's more in line and consistent with your moral standard?
And that makes you a credible person? Since you said how can HJ be a credible lifestyle blogger....if I were you, I would shut up now really.

    thanks for the response

I think constructive criticism is generally a healthy thing.

also, you shouldn't always resort to the line of argument "don't like, don't read"

Just because people don't agree with every opinion in the comments section of, say, the Straits Times, doesn't mean you just stop reading the whole paper.

you need to come up with better points of view than just 'stop reading it then..'

    ReplyDelete
  20. Anonymous1:59 pm

Anon 12:55, in case you haven't read. "Don't like, don't read" is ONE of the things I said. The MAIN reasons I've stated for you to stop reading and quit criticizing are:

    1. You have issues with HJ not being consistent in life choices and doing advertorials for things she supposedly doesn't believe in.

    2. You advocate and say how people should be more consistent with their life choices

    AND

    3. But you STILL come back to this blog constantly despite your issue with the content so the question is WHY are you still coming back if her thinking is not in line with yours and you supposedly have issues with her?

Mind you, this is NOT The Straits Times which happens to be the very few national papers in Singapore. This is one of a gazillion blogs out there, so don't tell me the whole "just because you don't agree with the newspaper doesn't mean you don't read it" arguement cos in case you haven't noticed, you're comparing apple to orange. That is, you're comparing one of the gazilion lifestyle blogs out there to a national newspaper which happens to hold quite some bit of monopoly in Singapore.

The bottomline is, if you said HJ is inconsistent with her life choices, you are the same and not any better because you don't agree with her but still coming back for more...so you should therefore go to blogs that are in-line with your idealism

  22. When I said -

"A Job should never be JUST A JOB.

You spend half of your waking hours devoted to it. Your job plays a big role in your happiness, the happiness of your family, where you live, and how well you live. It will even determine the kind of education and opportunities your children will have and, consequently, their future prospects."

I meant it. And anyone can see it makes sense and it is true. But just because I don't slave (or am no longer stuck in a career I didn't enjoy) doesn't mean I'm not consistent or say one thing and do the opposite.

I am happy with what I am doing. To some it may look like a hobby (kudos to me for making it look so effortless I guess) but to me, it's a job that I love.

and yes, if you're looking for employment now, you SHOULD consider homing in on a career that makes a difference. I don't see why I have to be bloody Florence Nightingale or something in order to warrent saying something like that.

For those who spoke up for me, thank you :)

but yeah .. i'm amazed how some ppl take such umbrage over this advertorial which main purpose was to disseminate info on an upcoming career fair. *furrowed expression*

    ReplyDelete
  23. whoops... typo on Warrant. just thought I'd quickly point tht out myself... just incase tht sparks a whole new issue against me :) (!!)

    ReplyDelete
  24. Hur hur.. Still hilarious.. In fact, maybe even more so now..

Why is it hilarious? Because MHA is so not you. It's like David Beckham advertising Triumph seamless party bras. Love how you tried to personalise it though ("men in uniforms.. *wink*").. Muahahaha..

On a separate note, it seems 'anonymous' is a very popular name, which I don't quite understand. I mean, what's the harm in using real names here? It's not as if anyone's gonna hunt the person down if they don't like their comments. I just don't get it. I'm seeing so many anons, I'm tempted to name my kids "Anonymous + birth time".. I mean, unique names are so passe..

Some point in time in year 2008, I realised the way journalists write in Straits Times are quite unprofessional (made presumptions, use of subjective phrases, propaganding etC)... Since then I have stopped reading it for good. So it is logical to say "don't like it, don't read it". :P

  26. Most Singaporean men prefer Foreign Affairs rather than Home Affairs. That's why you see so many of them in Batam every weekend!
