Christmas for Payatas

How are you spending Christmas?

I'm sure that for many of my readers, Chirstmas is a time of good cheer, great food, drinks, presents, joy and love.

But for the poverty striken in the Philippines, it is nothing like that.

The landfill in Payatas, The Philippines, is notoriously known the world over as Smokey Mountain. For over 35 years, the smoking dump site has grown to become a stark and heart-tugging reminder of the desperate conditions of humanity.

On a daily basis, children pick through newly arrived garbage to collect material to sell. The earnings made by one child are notenough to even buy food for the day. Hence, entire families are forced to climb the mountain each day, hoping to earn enough to feed everyone. Children as young as four years old are forced to work in this daily struggle for survival.

Christmas For Payatas is a cause to help fund the projects already in place, and help fund additional projects aimed at providing better housing, and a means of livelihood for the Payatas community.

Totedaddy together with The Light House For Children , basketball legends in the philippines, as well as footballers Ray Parlour from Arsenal and Lee Sharp from Man United, are all responding to the plight of these children and are helping to bring a little cheer to them this Christmas. Every little bit counts. Do what you can to make a difference.

  1. its not just in Philippines, Singapore do have people living in poverty.

Sad to say , we're not doing much to help them either.

  2. yeah.. there are people living in poverty all over the world...

I do think that Singapore does a lot ... well.. more than most nations at least. we have all the charity groups, and homes, and funds and causes. But of course we cannot help every single person... we cannot eradicate poverty.

But I think it's much worse for the Payatas than any Singaporean (no matter how poor). They live on a hiil of garbage and eat/shit/school/sleep/work there. AT least in Singapore, even if you are poor, you can have access to facilities, such as public toilets where there is clean drinkable water from taps. SO we don't have disease such as Thypoid etc, cos the poor here don't have to drink water with their feaces in them.

But they don't have tht sort of "luxury" in most other countries. :(

  3. yeah that kinda slump you wont ever see it in Singapore.

I think i saw a video of another similar slump too. Living on rubbish dumps.

Well, our help cant do much seriously, it requires government intervention. relocate them to better places and give them education

What we can do is only to create that awareness and hope some rich kind pinoy minister will take notice of it

  6. Hi,We looked all over to find out who was helped with the $81,000 plus that was collected as the site said for the poor children near the garbage dump. Later we heard it was also for other programs not near the dump (Although that was not advertised at first)
Any way, we wnt to the pre-school which is also part of this and found out they don't have a principal and there has been no electricity for three months. Now I am at a profound loss. $81,000+ raised and these babies need to grope in the dark at school? Also I was told that the money also went to the feeding program there but that can't be because the Rotary Club has been supplying the food.
Many politicians were at the photo shoot and many good hearted stars and common people gave their hard earned money so why is there no electric at the school and why do the areas Pastor's say they have received nothing of the funds. The Lighthouse website on the Tote Daddy site has been cancelled. No one answers phones and I can not get an answer. Please, help SAVE PAYATAS: http://www.savepayatas.com

  8. Don't worry, we are making a difference in Payatas. We are soliciting donors to sponsor children, to provide school materials and other essentials for a normal life.
