Shopping is a chore. I'd rather click a few buttons online than wander about at the mall. But last Sunday evening, I had a first date coffee at Parkway's Dome. When the date was over, I was waiting for my brother to pick me up because we were going to have dinner with mom and dad at East Coast again. So I had ten minutes to kill.

One thing that occurred to me was - How come we don't have any black SuperHeros? And I mean a proper heavy weight Superhero... the likes of Superman, Batman, Flash, The Hulk.. and the uber cool Iron man...
And I went into Cotton On Body for the first time in Singapore (yes, I know it's been here for many months now). And guess what? It's so bloody cheap!
I got all that stuff above for a total of S$22. Bad thing was the boots didn't come in pink, and they are one size too big. But it was so cheap. And so cute!

Ok, the next half of this post is not quite as pretty as my new (dirt cheap!) underwear... but you will read it regardless.

Last night, I watched Hancock.

Some people don't like it because it didn't have a great nemesis, a super villain which all good superhero movies have. Granted, after the first ten minutes which was filled with a high speed car chase and mega destruction, the rest of the movie became more of a drama rather than an action movie. But I enjoyed it. I loved the human elements of hope, longing, loss and sacrifice than ran through the whole film. (Don't look at me for a synopsis! Go watch it)

Yes, there was Halle Berry's Storm (But of all the cool mutants... Storm? The one with the creepy looking eyeballs? yeah.. fucking great...) and there was Catwoman (though Catwoman, was originally meant to be a white woman.. and no matter how much her nose has changed, last time I checked, Halle Berry's still black).
erm... Barack Obama? Does he count ? :)
What's that in the sky? It's a bird ... it's a plane... it'll sooner be a flying elephant or a talking pig than a black superhero.
.
I am not racist... neither am I partial towards minorities. (Though I am a minority myself!) But what kind of a world have we been living in?
.
You know what? Go read Sydney Portier's Measure of a Man. He was the first black actor to make it in Hollywood, he broke the mould of Black men always playing supporting roles, or low down characters.
nuffnang brought a grp of nuffnangers to watch hancock on mon nite too
ReplyDelete:( I wasn't invited !!!
ReplyDeleteHey Holly,
ReplyDeleteWell they do have African american superheroes in the same league as Superman, Batman, Etc. One of them is their partner in the Justice League; the Green Lantern.
Heard rumors of a Justice League movie coming up, come to think of it Will Smith would make a good Green Lantern...
Adrian
Hi Adrian :)
ReplyDeleteThanks for tht. Actually prior to writing this post i asked my friends if they knew of any black superhero... and the Green Lantern came up.
But when I googled it and looked at pictures.. he was white with brown hair. Looks a lot like robin's size but with lighter hair. The old comics of Green Lantern is white guy??? look at ( http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Green_Lantern ) Strange.. think maybe its a recent thing over the last decade they made him black? I dunnoe
Hey Holly,
ReplyDeleteThere are several Green Lanterns John Stewart is the black one. I guess i get what you mean when you say most of the major superheroes are Caucasian. i guess it is just the targeted audience the creator had i mind when creating a hero and also the fact that most creators of major comic book heroes are Caucasian themselves ... I guess this helps them (and the targeted audience) relate to the character...
Haha ... I feel like such a geek now ... Choosing between commenting on women lingerie and comic book superheroes, I choose the latter ... *sighs* lol ...
Anyways nice 'chatting' with you.
Adrian
thank you Adrian :)
